Tale of a Gun: Forensic Technology Featured in Canadian Business Magazine
MONTREAL - March 8, 2007
Tale of a gun is the title of an article penned by Matthew McClearn, a writer for Canadian Business, Canada’s business newsmagazine. The article, which is prominently featured on the cover page of the magazine’s February 26th edition, focuses on Jamaica’s use of Forensic Technology’s ballistics imaging technology known as the Integrated Ballistics Identification System (IBIS®).
Forensic Technology wishes to congratulate both Canadian Business Magazine and Mr. McClearn for having prepared and published an article that accurately illustrates the scope and importance of IBIS technology while detailing some of the potential hurdles that a country may face when combating gun violence.
In particular, the article zooms in on Jamaica’s acquisition of IBIS technology, and the ensuing implementation and use of IBIS by Jamaica’s law enforcement community. Mr. McClearn did interview key stakeholders in Jamaica, from the island’s national security minister to an assistant commissioner of police to the head of the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s ballistics laboratory. Of particular interest is the fact that in very little time, Jamaica has begun to confirm hits, meaning that, for each hit, two shootings that were otherwise not known to be linked together have now been confirmed to have been perpetrated with the same firearm.
We wish to highlight this article in light of the fact that it covers lots of ground, beginning with a brief history of ballistics science as well as a timeline of events that led to Forensic Technology’s commercialization of IBIS. The piece also aptly describes the importance of achieving a state of equilibrium by properly dosing the three main ingredients in the war against gun violence: people, processes, and technology.
