New IBIS BrassTRAX Systems Will Help ATF Move The National Integrated Ballistics Information Network (NIBIN) Into a New Era of Crime Fighting

MONTREAL - December 8, 2006

Forensic Technology is proud to announce that, in an effort to further improve efficiency and networking capabilities, the ATF has purchased twelve (12) state-of-the-art IBIS BrassTRAX systems and approved them for use with other IBIS systems on the NIBIN network.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF) provides IBIS equipment to over two hundred (200) police agencies. The agencies are able to share their ballistics data through the National Integrated Ballistics Information Network (NIBIN), which the ATF administers.

Utilizing IBIS technology, BrassTRAX is a highly-automated desktop acquisition station that collects images of fired cartridge cases and forwards them to be searched against the NIBIN Database. Operating at speeds well beyond human capability, the new evidence can be searched against the other evidence in the database in an effort help police to find a match between other crimes, guns, and ultimately suspects.

The arrival of BrassTRAX within the NIBIN network signifies that the evidence of one can now be the evidence of all. Indeed, law enforcement agencies will now be able to quickly enter case evidence into the NIBIN network from their particular venue. This is crucial in that successful investigations rely on the fact that ballistics information must be generated promptly and acted upon in a timely fashion.

Every crime gun has a story to tell. The story lies in only two places. First: It is found in the ballistics data that is transferred to fired bullets and cartridge cases. Second: It is found in the identifying information stamped on the gun that is used to trace its transaction history. Crime solving success is dependant upon the efficient and effective management of BOTH sources of information from crime guns.

Several BrassTRAX features such as price, a desk top footprint, and automated ballistics image capture now put a NIBIN compatible ballistics solution within reach of many individual police agencies.

BrassTRAX technology can help increase the ultimate success of the NIBIN program. Critical ballistics data can be directly entered into the NIBIN network more quickly from the police precinct. This helps optimize the time of the forensic expert allowing the expert to focus on the review of the NIBIN database output and on forensic examination.
